WASHINGTON — Chinese President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump will meet at the White House Thursday during the first state visit by a Chinese leader to Washington in 11 years.
The visit comes as the United States and China remain engaged in a trade dispute and face dissents over technology, security policy and Taiwan.
The two countries are also assessing the effects of the war in Iran, including Iran’s effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a major route for world oil and gas shipments.
Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, are scheduled to arrive Wednesday at Joint Base Andrews, where Trump will greet them, according to a White House route released Monday.
The visit will continue Thursday with a state arrival ceremony involving 479 military personnel representing all branches of the U.S. armed forces.
The ceremony will include military honors, national anthems, remarks by Trump and Xi, a military review and a flyover by a B-2 Spirit bomber and four F-22 Raptors.
The White House said Trump and first lady Melania Trump will welcome Xi and Peng at the South Lawn ceremony.
The United States Army Herald Trumpets, the Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon, the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps and the Marine Drum and Bugle Corps are scheduled to participate.
The United States and Chinese national anthems will be played by the Marine Band. The ceremony will consist with the flyover, according to the route issued by the White House.
After the ceremony, the first lady and Peng are scheduled to visit the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art. The couples will attend a state dinner Thursday evening in the White House East Room.
On Friday, Trump and Melania Trump will host Xi and Peng for tea in the White House Red Room.
The couples then will travel to the National Archives to view records and documents related to the history of U.S.-Chinese relations. The visit will end there with a farewell by the president and first lady.
The White House has not announced detailed agreements expected from the summit. Most observers expect to see lots of symbolism and ceremony intended to stabilize the U.S.-China relationship, but perhaps not as much in terms of major new commitments.
Both governments are likely to want to use the visit to establish a period of diplomatic calm, although significant dissents remain.
Trump is expected to seek economic engagements from Beijing, including increased purchases of American agricultural products.
After Trump’s May summit with Xi in Beijing, the White House announced China would purchase at least $17 billion annually in U.S. farm products through 2028, with the 2026 target planned.
Soybeans were excluded from that figure because China had separately pledged to increase soybean purchases.
However, since then, the Agriculture Department reported that China has only bought $3.9 billion in U.S. agricultural products, excluding soybeans, during the first seven months of 2026.
That total was only slightly higher than during the same period last year, when purchases were at a six-year low amid retaliatory tariffs.
The pace of purchases could become an issue in Washington. During his first term, Trump accused China of failing to meet earlier buying commitments and described the failure to purchase soybeans as an “economically hostile” act.
Trump may also seek Chinese assistance in dealing with Iran. China has previously been an important buyer of Iranian oil, and U.S. officials are expected to ask Beijing to use its influence to press Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
For Xi, the visit could provide an opportunity to seek continued restraint by Washington on a proposed $14 billion U.S. arms package for Taiwan.
The package is expected to include missiles, anti-drone weapons and air-defense systems. China claims Taiwan as its territory, while Taiwan’s government relies on U.S. military support and maintain its own armed forces.
Trump has described the proposed arms sale as leverage in negotiations with Beijing. After his May meeting with Xi, Trump said the package was “a very good negotiating chip for us, frankly.”
His administration has since delayed approval of the package and reduced public references to Taiwan. Beijing could warn that approval would produce consequences, including possible restrictions on Chinese rare-earth exports.
Xi could also signal that he might not attend the Group of 20 summit in Miami in December, which Trump is scheduled to host.
The timing of the Washington visit is significant for both leaders.
Trump is less than six weeks from the U.S. midterm elections and is expected to seek visible economic gains. Xi is preparing for a political ca
